The N.C. Cooperative Extension Center in Currituck County recently received a huge boost to its Backpacks for Kids program. Two local businesses, SAGA Construction and Carolina Designs, made a significant joint donation to help Currituck 4-H provide weekend meals for elementary school children in needy families.
Backpacks for Kids provides each child in the program with a backpack full of kid-friendly food supplies on Friday afternoons during the school year. The food is intended to last the child through the weekend, when they may be faced with a food shortage in their household.
To help provide supplies for Backpacks for Kids, SAGA Construction and Carolina Designs came together to donate $4,000 at the beginning of October.
Currituck 4-H has sponsored the Backpacks for Kids program since 2011 and currently serves more than 170 elementary school children in Currituck County. It received the Non-Profit of the Year Award in 2013 from the Currituck Chamber of Commerce for the success of the program.
